Job Summary

A clinically competent surgical assistant works under the supervision of the surgeon delivering safe and effective care during the intraoperative period. Effectively interacts with patients and health care team members while maintaining the surgical department standards. SAII is competent to serve as the surgeon’s first assistant during the operative procedure. Functions as “back up” for physician’s assistant “on call” rotation for weekends and holidays.


Qualifications - Minimum


Graduate of an AMA accredited surgical assistant program or equivalent training.  Will consider Physician Assistant.

 Must possess a minimum of one year current operating room experience.   

 Should possess the ability to understand and react effectively to the unique needs and care for all patients populations.

 Must be currently BLS certified and recruited per American Heart Association standards (every 2 years)

 Must be ACLS certified

 Must complete acceptable clinical training program for first assisting.

 Works efficiently with acutely ill patients, including emergency situations.

 Works independently as a self-starter but can work as a cooperative team member.

 Embraces change and keeps current with knowledge of new surgical procedures.

 Promotes the mission and values of Mercy Health Lorain.


Hours per pay period: 80

Hours: 7:00am to 5:30pm

(4) ten hour shifts with a weekend and holiday call rotations.
