Job Summary

Position Overview:

The Group CFO reports to Bon Secours Mercy Health's Chief Financial Officer.The Group CFO finance executive is a key strategic and operational business partner for the Group President/CEO leader. They are responsible for ensuring that overall financial operations of their Group are in alignment with targets. They will operate as a conduit for the centralized finance model maintaining consistent application of all finance policies and procedures across Bon Secours Mercy Health. The Group CFO will also play a key role in future merger and acquisitions analyses/decisions impacting the Group. As a finance executive for Bon Secours Mercy Health, the Group CFO will be a key steward of the financial and physical assets of the ministry and will serve as a key member of the leadership team.  Functional responsibility for Group P&L oversight and analysis, group finance operations, financial budgeting and planning, reporting and decision support, and revenue cycle.

The Group CFO,  will serve as a confidant to the Bon Secours Mercy Health CFO as well as the Bon Secours Mercy Health COO and provide the strategic and tactical leadership and direction on the financial affairs of the markets. This individual is a key steward of the financial and physical assets and serves as a strategic partner with the market and Bon Secours Mercy Health leaders in setting the vision and direction.

The Group CFO, as a member of the Finance Cabinet and Financial Leadership Team supports the market based CFOs in their roles as members of senior management.  This position also provides leadership, guidance and direction to system level capital planning, financial planning, financial reporting, revenue cycle, accounting, reimbursement and operating entity support functions through a well aligned coordination with the respective functional leaders and the market based leaders.

Principal Job Responsibilities:

As the Group CFO, he/she develops and provides operational and strategic direction, technical assistance and support for areas of responsibility. 

  • A confidant to the CFO and the Group President/CEO:
  • Counselor to the CFO– As a member of the CFO’s ’s direct support team, is a sought after counselor to the CFO to assist in the development and execution of strategies and operational initiatives that optimize current and future performance.
  • Operational and Strategic Perspective –In supporting the  COO of Bon Secours Mercy Health , is a hands-on executive who can see the big picture and has a strategic perspective, while focusing on the financial and operational challenges of each market with consideration for local market trends and their impact on the business. 
  • Oversee the Performance of Development of the Market CFOs and their teams - In addition to standard performance reviews (MOR’s), work with the market CFOs to build bench strength between them and their Site based CFO’s and Assistant CFO’s that would provide strong internal candidates for any future succession plan needs. Ensure strong succession planning for all markets.
  • Mercy/Summa Finance Liaison - The individual will serve as the principal point of contact with the Summa Health System CFO and their team relative to Mercy's 30% investment in Summa.  In this role, will serve on the Summa Operations Council team which will monitor performance against guardrails and synergy targets as established in the definitive agreement.
  • Governance Support- Provides support to market leadership in interactions with their Board(s) of Directors as well as support to the Bon Secours Mercy CFO relative to materials and analyses for the Mercy Board and Committees.
  • Mergers and Acquisitions - The individual will have an integral role in Bon Secours Mercy Health strategy to selectively expand its  footprint to new markets as well as consolidating/divesting positions in existing markets. The Group CFO will be responsible for coordinating financial aspects of the evaluations with strategy and operational leadership within Bon Secours Mercy Health; providing input to the Bon Secours Mercy Health CFO relative to valuation and optimal structures, including but not limited to full acquisition, joint operating agreements, joint ventures, and management agreements
  • A member of the Bon Secours Mercy Finance team:
  • Excellence -Assist the organization in monitoring accomplishment of the goal of being the best in quality, service, productivity and cost effectiveness.  
  • Communication -Maintains clear and open channels of communication between the markets and home office finance team.
  • Corporate Responsibility -Adheres to the standards and policies of the Corporate Responsibility program, including the duty to comply with applicable laws and regulations, and reporting any suspected unethical, fraudulent, or unlawful acts or practices.  Assure compliance with governmental reporting and operational requirements for areas of responsibility.
  • System Guidelines and Policies– Through others and in consultation with Mercy Finance leadership across the system:
  • Accounting System Policies and Procedures -Assure market compliance with all financial reporting requirements and disclosures of Bon Secours Mercy Health and ensures that financial policies, procedures and controls are consistently and accurately implemented.
  • Internal Controls– Assure market maintenance of internal controls, policies and procedures to Bon Secours Mercy Health standards to safeguard cash and other assets.
  • Audit Process -Supports overall audit processes and follows up with market CFOs to assure improvements are communicated and implemented.
  • Revenue Cycle –Creates and maintains a high degree of awareness of the progress and result tracking in tandem with Ensemble Revenue Cycle Leader.
  • Financial Planning –Assures coordination between the market CFO and Bon Secours Mercy Health relative to financial analysis, annual budgets, financial forecasts, and capital expenditure analyses in support of the system and market operational and strategic plans.  Key component will be the support and monitoring of Run Rate Performance Plans for the markets.
  • Financial Close - Monitors the completion of monthly financial close, working with the market CFOs to provide all levels of operational analysis and actionable information post close.  
  • Finance Service Level Agreements (SLAs) - as a lead member of the Bon Secours Mercy finance team serves as liaison between the central team and market CFOs to assure that the Finance group is meeting expectations and continuing to expand its role as a strategic partner of operational leadership. 

Education/ Professional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA, BS) in Business Administration is required
  • Master’s Degree (MS, MBA) in Business, Accounting or Finance strongly preferred. 
  • CPA license and Fellow with HFMA are highly desirable.


  • Significant executive-level finance experience with demonstrated career progression insignificant roles in finance or as a Chief Finance Officer in an integrated healthcare system is required. Experience in a multi-hospital system is preferred.
  • Public accounting experience desired but not required.
  • Catholic hospital experience will be a plus.
  • Payer risk based contracting experience will be a plus.
  • Experience negotiating and managing with partnership arrangements with other health care providers (hospitals, physicians).
  • Experience with physician recruitment and employment including work with employed physician markets.
