Job Summary

Perform complex chemical, biological, hematological, immunologic, microscopic, and bacteriological tests. Microscopically examine blood and other body fluids. Make cultures of body fluid and tissue samples, to determine the presence of bacteria, fungi, parasites, or other microorganisms. Analyze samples for chemical content or a chemical reaction and determine concentrations of compounds. They also type and cross match blood samples for transfusions. Evaluate test results, have input in the development and modifying of procedures, and establish and monitor programs, to ensure the accuracy of tests. Acts as an ambassador for patient relations by providing a positive first impression to patients, visitors, team members and others through their hospitable attitude and disposition.

Performs complex laboratory procedures accurately in accordance with established laboratory policies/procedures, and established standards of accreditation agencies. Operates complex automated analysis equipment and/or laboratory computer system to perform designated tests; sets up and adjusts laboratory equipment and apparatus appropriate for the designated tests.

Stains and prepares slides of specimen material for microscopic examination and evaluation; prepares chemical solutions and reagents; maintains growth and virulence of cultures; observes reaction and makes/records readings of test results. Provides timely support Pathologist, Director, Coordinator and Technical Leaders to improve overall quality and day-to-day operations.

Maintains work area. Cleans bench tops and equipment after each spill and daily at the end of the work shift as required. Documents as required. Records test data, makes statistical calculations, compares laboratory results with normal values and investigates atypical results to determine cause.

Evaluates and determines validity of test sample values based on testing of quality control materials.Recognizes and address unexpected test reactions, errors and discrepancies. Utilizes the LIS and Cortex system in the performance of job duties, to include: looks up patient information and enters testing data/results. Develops, tests, documents and implements new test methodologies, including quality control parameters, by evaluating guides or possible alternative approaches to standard methods; recommends updates to the departmental policies and procedures.

Provides consultative services regarding laboratory procedures, test results and examinations to medical staff, laboratory personnel and other healthcare providers. Keeps abreast of new technical and theoretical procedures and departmental policies and procedures.

Required Minimum Education: 4 year/Bachelor's Degree



37.5 hours per week
